"to another gifts of healing by that one Spirit" (1 Cor 12:9) The importance of physical well-being can never be over-emphasized. Ailment of the body can disorganize everything. The Bible even this stresses by saying that when one part of the body suffers, every part suffers with it (1 Cor 12:26). And our physical body is our connection to this physical world. If one is sick in the body, every other things will be brought to an unfortunate halt (sometimes including eating) whether one likes it or not. Therefore, it is not surprising that the Holy Spirit will devote one aspect of His ministry to handling physical ailments. The Holy Spirit would empower some people specifically for the purpose of bringing divine healing to the ailments of the body. This shows that, contrary to what many believe, God is interested in what goes on in and with our body. Many people believe that God lives just in our heart, and does not look at our body. But the Bible says that our body is the temple of the Holy Spirit. It is only seemly that the Holy Spirit will love to dwell in a healthy body! .
The first thing to notice about the gift of healing is that in the original King James version, the gift is referred to in the plural terms, gifts of healing, not gift of healing. This implies that even though we treat it as one gift it is actually one gift comprising of many gifts - it is the gifts of healing! This gift (or gifts, as the case may be) is the supernatural healing of diseases and infirmities without natural means of any sort. They are the miraculous manifestation of the Spirit for banishment of all human diseases - organic, functional, nervous, acute, severe or chronic. It doesn't matter. The Holy Spirit through this gifts brings divine healing to sicknesses.
This gift does not in any way replace or belittle the sign of healing sicknesses which Jesus promised that it will follow them that believe (Mark 16:17). A believing christian can still pray for a sick person, without possessing this gift, and they will become healed. But gift is a question of grace. Someone operating with this gift will certainly be able to heal more persons through the ministration of the Holy Spirit. It is like the saying that Saul has killed a thousand, but David has killed ten thousands. It is grace and gift at work.
The plurality of the gift has to do with the ability of the Spirit to use individuals in various healing ministries. It is possible to see the Holy Spirit use someone specifically in the healing of blind people, and that person finds it difficult to heal a mad person. The reason for this is only known by the Holy Spirit. The gifts of healing cannot be exhausted by this devotional article.
