the power of communication (part 1)

"And the LORD said, Behold, the people is one, and they have all one language; and this they begin to do: and now nothing will be restrained from them, which they have imagined to do." (Gen 11:6) Many people underestimate the power of communication much to their own detriment. The truth about life and survival is that for as long as we live here we will always run into people. Nobody can truly live a secluded life. At one point in your life you will meet people, you will come in contact with people, you will relate with people, you will require something of people and you will need people's assistance. The secret to enjoying a seamless and productive relationship with people is communication. Your communication skill account for more than 80% of your overall success in life. You have to understand that success comes from providing solution to others; and it takes a lot of communication skill to get people to accept and appreciate the solution you are providing. So, one of the things you should develop this year is your communication ability. Make a plan this year to improve your communication skill. Take a communication class. Learn salesmanship. Learn and improve on your ability to communicate your ideas to others. Also improve on your ability to listen. Communication is not a monologue. It is a two-way process that involves speaking and listening, sending and receiving, coding and decoding!.

In the very first story of human community project as recorded in our text above, the people set a goal to build a tower that will stretch from the earth and touch the heavens, and this they were doing in defiance to God's instruction to spread all over the earth. It is funny because I personally would have dismissed this community white elephant project with a wave of the hand and tag it impossible and unrealistic if not for what God Himself said in the following verse: "and now nothing will be restrained from them, which they have imagined to do"

And what baffled me the more was what God pinpointed as their secret weapon. God said it was not because the were technologicallly advanced. It was not because they were great bricklayers and carpenters. It was not because they were sophisticated architects or builders. But the secret that was going to make them successful was that they have one language and their communication was superb. They can understand each other without saying much.
