"Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God." (Matt 5:9) I often wonder why Jesus said that peacemakers will be called the sons of God. Right before this statement, He had said that the merciful shall obtain mercy. Why didn't He say that the peacemakers shall obtain peace. In that famous sermon on the mount, Jesus shortlisted several virtues and the rewards attached to them. But talking about peacemakers, He simply said that they shall be called the sons of God. Didn't seem much like a reward to me compared to the meek inheriting the earth, the hungry being filled, the poor in spirit receiving the kingdom, the pure in heart seeing God, etc. Why is being called sons of God such a befitting reward for peacemakers?.
To fully understand this mystery we must compare the virtues listed in Matthew 7 with the fruits of the spirit listed in Galatians 5:22. We will notice that only two of those virtues - meekness and peace appears as the fruit of the Holy Spirit. This opens our eyes to an amazing revelation. But since we are concetrating on peace for this discussion, we must understand that no man is capable of making peace by himself. Review all the characteristics we listed yesterday that a peacemaker must possess, and you will realize it is obvious that no person on their own power will be willing and able to exhibit such qualities. It takes the Spirit of God. Peacemakers do not need any other reward because they already have it all. They are children of God. That means they by default they shall enter the kingdom of God, they shall be filled, they shall inherit the earth, they shall see God, etc. All the other rewards received by the other persons are bundled into one and handed over to peace makers.
Peacemakers are spiritual people. They are conscious of the presence of the Holy Spirit. And they live their lives with that consciousness. That is why they have no time to make trouble with anybody. They have far better things occupying their attenton. They are sons of God. They have the life of God in them!
