Excellence - a watch word for parenting

"Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it." (Prov 22:6) What interests me most in this scripture is the phrase "train up"; train "up" not down. Build up a child; develop a child; instill in a child the attributes that will make him or her move up in life and stay up. It is no secret that in adulthood we tend to retain the lessons and characters that we were exposed to in our early years as children. That is why excellence, must be a watchword for parents. Parents must from the word go decide and determine that their children will be people of excellence. This will determine your choice of school for them, choice of movies and entertainment for them, choice of books, choice of play toys, etc. Not a single one of us was not influenced by parenting. It therefore follows that children exposed to and trained to recognise and seek excellence tend to do same. The Bible says "when he is old he will not depart from it"..

The world we live in today would have been better if we had had better parents 10-20 years ago. Subsequently, the world of tomorrow will be better if we can be better parents today. It is not enough to pray for your child's future. You should also build their future into them. What you are giving your children now will determine their tomorrow. Some parents are careless with their children. They expose their children to all manner of movies and TV programming. Dear parents, don't expect your children to read the Bible when they have never seen you reading it. Don't expect them do do well in school when they have never seen you come home as Employee of the month in your workplace. Teach them excellence; most importantly show them!
