"But those who wait on the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles, they shall run and not be weary, they shall walk and not faint" (Isa 40:31) Last month, I wrote a piece on the topic "wait" where I talked about the prophetess Anna and how she lived a life of devotion to God. Now something occurred to me as I feel pressed to discuss further on the topic of waiting. I am sure most of us are familiar with the term or phrase "to wait upon the Lord". What exactly does it mean? Does it imply downing all your tools, plunging yourself into a period of inactivity and remaining stagnant until God comes and does something? What exactly is waiting upon the Lord, and how do you do it? .
The Bible says that those who wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength. Most times this phrase can be grossly misinterpreted. Sometimes we say this to suggest that we are waiting for God to do something in our lives, may be change our situation, or heal our sick person or liberate us from satanic bondage. So we are waiting on God to do something. But if this is what we imply when we say "wait upon God" then we are guilty of fallacy! God isn't going to do something, He has already done everything He said He would do. He has forgiven all our sins! He has healed all our sicknesses! He has delivered us from all satanic bondage. Everything God said He would do is already in the past tense, because He has already done them for us. The truth is God finished everything two thousand years ago, and He is the one waiting for us...
So if that is the case why then do we wait upon God, and what does it mean to wait upon God, and how do we do that? The word "wait" means to "tarry" - to constantly and repeatedly perform an action. That is why it says that the people who wait upon God must renew their strength, because it takes a great deal of physical and mental energy to keep doing one thing repeatedly. It can be boring at times. But our power, our victory, our strength comes from that repetition. It may seem like nothing at the time, but God uses it to bring about great things
