"For to one is given by the Spirit the word of wisdom..." (1 Cor 12:8) The Holy Spirit works in us to build, exhort and edify the church of Christ; and the way He does that is through the use of spiritual gifts. The first gift we shall discuss is the gift of words of wisdom. It is important to start by stating that what the Holy Spirit gives is the gift of "Words of Wisdom", not the gift of wisdom. There is a huge difference. Wisdom is the right and privilege of every believer (1 Cor 1:30); and the Bible teaches that anybody lacking wisdom should ask for it (James 1:5) which means no one is expected to lack wisdom. But "word of wisdom" is a different thing, it is a special gift of the Holy Spirit bestowed on certain individuals for the purpose of glorification of the Trinity and the edification of the body of Christ. Today, we discuss in more details about this special gift of the Holy Spirit..
The word of wisdom is the supernatural revelation by the Holy Spirit of divine purpose; the supernatural declaration of the mind and will of God; the supernatural unfolding of His plans and purposes concerning things, places, people, individuals, etc. I quote this definition from the book "Pentecostal Truth". In other words, it is right to simply say that the word of wisdom is the ability to supernaturally declare the hidden mind of God about the future through the help of the Holy Spirit.
The gift of word of wisdom is not the same thing as possessing high intellectual efficiency. It is not to be confused with the ability to interpret the Bible or interpret dreams or prophecies. The gift of wisdom is not for unfolding or explaining God's revealed will in His word; but for unfolding His unrevealed will. It is not to be confused with administrative wisdom, or even the divine wisdom which Jesus gives as earlier stated. It is not the ability to show prudence or sagacity or the ability to speak in riddles and proverbs.
The words of wisdom is used to warn people of approaching danger, to make known or confirm a person's calling into the ministry, to apprise someone or people of blessing or judgment to come, to reveal the future and to give special guidance in a particular direction in special circumstances.
Below are some scriptural references of where the gift of words of wisdom was used in the Bible: Gen 6:13-22; Gen 19:12.13; Matt 2:20; Gen 41:16, 28-41; Acts 26:16; Exodus 25; Acts 10:9-16; Acts 27. These scriptures will give you a clear example of the usage of the words of wisdom.
