Growing in grace

"But grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ..." (2 Pet 3:18) Grace and knowledge are intertwined. Part of what we did yesterday was to try and establish the relationship between our operation in grace and our knowledge of God. No man can function above the level of his knowledge. Our knowledge is our greatest asset, and can also be our greatest handicap. If we know more, we tend to do more, believe more, act more, achieve more. I always wondered why Paul was consumed and obsessed with the desire to know God more. He was never satiated by any knowledge he had of God at any point in time. He kept desiring to know God more. The reason as I came to realize is quite simple and practicable: the more he grew in the knowledge of God, the more he grew in grace. If we know the importance of grace and the difference it can make in the life of a person, then we can never over-estimate or over-emphasize the need of spending time, energy and whatever it may cost us to know God..

The Apostle Peter was kind enough to share this divine formular with the early church. Do not go envying others for the grace of God that is operating in their lives. You can also activate God's grace in your life and also grow in grace by simply getting to know God more. And God is ever willing to be known of us. Now notice that it says "grow in grace", and not "grow your grace". This is because you are the one actually doing the growing and not the grace. The grace of God is always sufficient and needs no growing. But we grow in our use and appropriation of God's grace as we grow in the knowledge of Him!

Stay blessed.
