Satisfying your hunger (part 1) - the science of hunger

"Do not work for the food that goes bad; instead work for the food that lasts for eternal life..." (John 6:27, GNV) Hunger is a blessing and a curse. It is uncomfortable to suffer hunger. It is excruciating. It can reduce the proudest man to a street beggar. Hunger can humiliate the greatest of the great and lay in abeyance his mighty demeanours. Hunger can give one a sharp shift in perspective. One of the terrible ways to die is die out of hunger. When one is hungry, one can hardly comprehend, assimilate, remember, communicate, relax, sleep, etc. Hunger brings a total discord to one's psyche. It affects the physical, the emotional and the spiritual. It has been said that a hungry man is an angry man; yes, a hungry man is also a vulnerable man. Hunger is painful and distasteful. The desire for food is one of the strongest desire of man. In the hierarchy of human needs, food ranks highest above clothing, happiness and any other thing that could be considered a need. .

According to Science, once the energy stores in the body are running low, the level of ghrelin (usually called the hunger hormone) starts to rise and can only be suppressed once a person starts eating food. This hormone as it rises in the body can lead to the feelings of depression, sleeplessness, fear; and reduction in learning and memory capabilities. Why would God give man such an attribute? Why would God create hunger? Why were we so punished with the desire to eat food. In Genesis 1:29, after creating man and blessing him and telling him to be fruitful and have dominion; the next thing God told him was "Expect hunger".
