"For it is not the hearers of the law who are righteous before God, but the doers of the law who will be justified." (Romans 2:13, ESV) Because of the high emphasis on spirituality and the outbreak of radical Christianity coupled with the increase in number of churches, our generation is plagued by a new type of spiritual problem. We do not necessarily live in the generation where people are astonished at hearing the gospel. Most people on our part of the world have heard the gospel in one form or the other and at one time or another. As a result, these days the problem we have today in the world and in the church is not those who have not heard the gospel, but those who hear it and fail to do it. Hearing is not enough....
Apparently, it is another Sunday, and soon most of us would be in our churches to hear the word again. We have been hearing the word for years. We have become so familiar with the word. We can even recite the word. But the Bible says it is not the one who hears that is justified but the one who does. The Bible is simply saying that going to church is not enough. Becoming a member, an usher, a chorister or even a Sunday School teacher is not what matters most - those are not the things that make you righteous before God. What justifies you before God is doing the word.
Ask yourself this question: "Am I a doer of the word?" You possibly went to church last Sunday. Now access yourself, the message you heard last Sunday did you put it to practise or did it go into the archives where you pile up messages in your brain which you never get to practise. God is not just calling us to hear the word, but to do it. The power in the word of God is not in hearing it, but in doing it. As long as all you do is hear the word of God, the devil is not bothered. The day satan becomes scared of you is the day you start doing the word! Don't just be a hearer of the word; don't just be another number on the pew; don't just be another church goer. No, get the word, hear the word, assimilate the word and put it to practice.
Faith comes by hearing the word of God. But faith on its own is dead unless it is accompanied by works. So when you hear the word of God without doing it, you accumulate dead faith! Hearing is not enough. Do it!
Prayer
Lord grant me the grace to do your word in Jesus name. Amen!
