The reckoning (Part 1)

"After a long time the lord of those servants cometh, and reckoneth with them...For unto every one that hath shall be given and he shall have abundance: but from him that hath not shall be taken away even that which he hath" (Matt 25:19,30) As we move through the daily endless routine of life, life itself starts to seem endless. The reason most people are afraid to die is because they are afraid of what lies beyond after death; and so for them perpetual existence on this part of eternity is a way of escaping whatever it is that lie beyond. And another set of people crassly make up their mind that there is nothing beyond this life. That death is the ultimate cessation of existence. They become like the proverbial ostrich that digs the ground and buries its head to escape from its captor while leaving the rest of its body above ground. Like the ostrich, they believe that as long as they can't see the captor, then the captor can't see them. .

They assume that because they can't see the great beyond is an indication that it doesn't exist. Some days ago somebody forwarded to my Whatsapp, an extract of an interview supposedly held with Rick Warren, the author of The Purpose-Driven Life. In this interview it was said that Rick Warren was asked, "what is the ultimate purpose of life?"; and he responded that "Life is a preparation for eternity. We are all here to prepare for eternity". Now, that was what got my attention.

The life we live today seem to be an anything-goes roadshow. Our actions seem to have little or no consequences. We have lost sight of the gravity of the reckoning. We have found a way to cushion the effect of thinking about eternity. We have blotted out the fact that we are here as servants to a great Master, and whatever we do shall be accounted for.
